Did you know that the Ukrainian Christmas tune Shchedryk become one of the most famous in the world? You have heard, perhaps dozens of times in American films, but could not guess what Carol of the bells - this adapted version of our Shchedryk.
How you think which version is better?
First song composed by Mykola Leontovich was performed choir of Kiev University in 1916. In "Shchedryk" sung about swallow that flew into the house proclaim a rich year for the family. According to a popular but inaccurate interpretation Ukrainian original based on old Slavic legend that every bell in the world glorified Jesus on the night when he was born.
Already in 1921 a Christmas song was performed at Carnegie Hall in New York. She liked the Americans that in 1936 Peter Vilhovskyy, of Ukrainian descent, made a translation Shchedryk, called Carol of the bells. It is in this version of the song gained worldwide fame.
